Labour Updates

In Ontario, we have a two-tier collective bargaining process for school boards and their staff. It involves central (provincial) and local bargaining processes for staff groups, including teachers and support staff.

In August 2019, provincial and local contracts for all education workers in the province of Ontario expired. In the SCDSB, this means that all our unionized groups are at different stages of contract negotiations at the provincial and local level.

Unionized groups that represent SCDSB staff are:

Our priority during any job action is the safety of our students. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on the status of negotiations and our schools whenever possible. As a board, we respect all our staff members and value their work. We remain committed to reaching fair, negotiated agreements with all our employee groups.

Latest update - as of Oct. 2, 2019

CUPE workers announce full provincial withdrawal of service beginning Monday, Oct. 7

On Oct. 2, the provincial branch of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced their intent to proceed with a full legal strike across Ontario, beginning Monday, Oct. 7. In the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB), CUPE represents our custodial and maintenance staff.

We remain hopeful that a contract can be negotiated. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates whenever possible.

Thank you for your understanding.

Community use of school (external) permits placed on hold indefinitely
On Sept. 30, the provincial branch of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) began job action in the form of work-to-rule across the province of Ontario. Work-to-rule means a partial withdrawal of service by the employee group. In the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB), CUPE represents our custodial and maintenance staff.

As a result of this work-to-rule job action, all external permits in SCDSB schools and facilities will be indefinitely on hold beginning Oct. 1, 2019. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate your patience and understanding.
