CCI Sports

The Co-curricular Athletic Program at CCI offers students a wide range of oportunities to compete against students from other schools throughout the Georgian Bay area, and around Ontario. Approximately forty volunteer teacher coaches work with students at developing both physical and social skills. Collingwood CI host some of the finest tournaments in Ontario in several sports.

Cross Country Running
A fall sport, Cross Country Running is an excellent way for athletes who are not currently on a team to get into condition, or stay in condition, for another sport. CCI has a tradition of doing well in Cross Country Running, as we have won many League and GBSSA team Championships over the years. Our workouts begin in early September and continue until the OFSAA Meet in the first weekend of November. Our training is a mix of distance running, and intervals. We try to get out to an area away from the school to train once a wee. Everyone is welcome to come out and join the Cross Country Running Team.

Track and Field
The Track season begins in early March and runs until the OFSAA meet in the begining of June. Our early practices are run in the gym, with a mixture of conditioning and skill drills. As the weather improves, we move outdoors so that athletes can practice all the events, from 100 m to 3000 m on the track, and from Long Jump to Javelin in the field. Everyone is encouraged to come out and participate in an enjoyable sport.

Wrestling
The CCI wrestling team in one of our most consistently successful athletic programs of the past 20 years. The team works out four time a week on the the mats between November and March, and on the weights and roadwork at least three times a week in the off season. We compete in 10 female high school divisions and 15 male weight classes at weekend tournaments and throught the week at GBSSA Competitions. The team has consistently sent members to the Ontario and the Canadian Championships, and occasionally to the World Championships, where we have usually medaled. Collingwood has been host to some of the largest wrestling events in the province. In 1986 the Canadian Schoolboy Championships and in 1987 the World Youth Wrestling Championships were held in Collingwood. In our recent 20 year history we have hosted instructional camps for over 3000 area elementary students, exposed over 400 high school students to a successful wrestling program, and won more than our share of the potential hardware available. Team members get all their expenses paid and have the best equipment that money can buy thanks to a strong parents group that sponsors regular Bingo and Nevada ticket sales.
